On Being Courageous

How do you define courage? Many people assume courage is the lack of fear, when nothing could be further from the truth. If courage were simply not being afraid, there would be no strength in it. It would come easy. In fact, courage is very closely related to fear. Courage is facing your fear and pushing forward regardless. It’s scary, but it can be done. And you CAN do it.

Building Courage

Courage does not come easily to most people. And that is okay. If it were easy, everyone could do it! So how do you build courage? Maybe you have never considered courage as something that you can build, but you can. Courage is like a muscle, it needs to be exercised. Courage is built through facing fears and challenges and overcoming them. It is looking your fear in the face and pushing on. It can be done, and you can do it.

Facing Fear

What is your greatest fear? Are you afraid to reach for your goals because you fear failure? Of looking foolish? Or are you afraid you just can’t hack it? That you just aren’t good enough? Maybe you are afraid that no matter how hard you try you will never reach your goals. So then what happens? You don’t try, because that seems easier. You don’t have to worry about looking silly if you just never try, right? Wrong!

Fear holds us back. It makes us complacent and it keeps us from reaching our goals, our potential. Today, make a commitment to yourself. Make the decision to face your deepest fear. The one you perhaps haven’t even admitted to yourself, the one that is holding you hostage. Face that fear and learn from it. Fear is what stops you, courage is what keeps you going.
